The Whitworth, is an active member of Manchester Artist Teachers Collective (MATC). We are proud to support its ambition to develop opportunities and campaigns for the professional development and wellbeing of visual arts educators.

The collective is made up of artist-teachers from across Manchester, alongside gallery educators from Manchester Art Gallery, the Whitworth, and HOME.

Together, we collaborate with art educators, local artists, studios, and gallery spaces to enrich creative practice across the city. We seek to develop and share artistic and educational expertise, enabling teachers to engage with contemporary practices and sustained personal making. By centering on the artist teachers’ own creative development, the collective highlights the local cultural ecology and future opportunities within Manchester for the young people they teach.

Building on our previous work, we will expand our programme through creative partnerships, offering an extensive series of continuous professional development (CPD) opportunities for all educators delivering visual arts for children and young people. A key priority this year is to strengthen leadership within the collective, with members stepping into new roles as artistteacher leaders.

We have been generously funded by Freelands Foundation since 2023 to test new ideas and find best practice, and are about to launch a programme of bookable events for visual art educators to connect with each other and be inspired.
