Decentralising Political Economies

dpe.tools is a new research website to foster useful art practices.

dpe.tools is a shared and open-source research platform developed by the Whitworth; The City Lab, part of The Institute of Art and Technology at Liverpool John Moores University’s School of Art and Design; and The Association of Arte Útil.

Questions we are asking include;

How can we begin to use art as a tool for generating social change in a post-Covid world?

How can we begin to use Museums and Galleries as sites of exchange – as places where the experience of art becomes operational rather than simply symbolic?

And how do Museums and Galleries begin the difficult process of moving toward a potentially post-exhibitionary era of interaction and use?

Over the next couple of years, dpe.tools will propose, develop, and test a range of possibilities to use art as an instigator of political and economic change. The research will support the development of 'Economics the Blockbuster' exhibition, taking place at the Whitworth in 2022/23.
