Turner in Time
Join the Whitworth as we continue to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the birth of the legendary English landscape artist J.M.W. Turner.
Following the success of the hugely popular Turner: In Light and Shade, this free exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to take a visual journey through the evolution of the style of this extraordinary artist.
As the home to the largest publicly held group of watercolours by the artist outside London, the Whitworth’s collection enables us to trace Turner’s development and innovation across time. From Turner’s cautious and delicate handling in the early Malmesbury Abbey, undertaken when the artist was still a teenager to the expressionistic study A Conflagration, Lausanne of 1840, this chronological presentation of these rarely seen Turner landscapes reveals the true scale of the artist’s inventive powers.
