Change Makers
In these workshops, pupils imagine, create and design their own solutions to problems in today’s ever-changing world.
Join us to explore environmental issues in Whitworth Park. The Change Makers programme uses art, University of Manchester researchers, creative thinkers and pupil voice to explore issue-based learning that can have a positive impact in the community.
Encouraging children’s inquisitive nature, Change Makers is a platform for children to have their say and share their thoughts and feelings on society today – including the things that matter most to them.

Case Study: Micro-Me Change Makers Project
In this unique project with Parrs Wood High, pupils explored our Albrecht Dürer’s Material World exhibition to develop their own, 21st century take on identity and ideas of ‘home’. Titled Micro-Me, the project encouraged pupils to draw parallels between Dürer’s 16th century material world and their own lived experiences in the modern day.
Year 10 pupils visited Albrecht Dürer’s Material World with Whitworth staff, printmaker Alan Birch and photographer Andrew Brooks. Using photography, they explored Dürer’s approach to capturing his subjects, making links to today’s use of social media and selfies. Through printmaking, they examined Dürer’s observational drawing and etching techniques. They then experimented with various techniques to develop a range of their own sketches, prints and photographic samples to prepare for a final piece.
Parrs Wood High teachers said:
‘It's been fantastic for our students, I think they've got an awful lot from seeing the work and then learning new techniques, which they can then apply.’
‘As part of our GCSE coursework, we've been looking at identity – so they've been exploring things that are important to them, things that explain to everybody else who they are. Coming here and also looking at identity, it's made them think about it in a completely different way.’
‘This experience of coming to an art gallery is something that they'll never forget. For some of them, it might be their first experience in such a setting. They will always remember working with a photographer and printmaker.’
