Driving directions
From M6 South/M56 eg from Stoke, the Wirral
1. Exit Junction 19 (Manchester). At roundabout, turn right to join A556. Continue for approximately 3 miles.
2. At next roundabout, turn right to join M56 at Junction 7. (M56 flows into A5103).
3. Follow signs for Manchester A5103 (Princess Parkway/Princess Road). Continue for 2 1/2 miles, after end of motorway, until you reach Moss Side (an area of Manchester).
4. Follow white on brown tourism sign (Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum) at junction of Princess Road/Moss Lane East (traffic lights, large grey Scottish and Newcastle Brewery on the corner) directing right onto Moss Lane East.
5. Follow road to end, follow tourism sign directing left at junction with Oxford Road.
6. The Whitworth Art Gallery is on the left, past Whitworth Park and opposite Manchester Royal Infirmary.
From M62 East/North eg from Leeds, Bradford, Bury
1. Exit Junction 17. At roundabout, turn left to join A56 from Bury.
2. In the City Centre, you will pass under a railway bridge and soon after pass Manchester Cathedral. The Road changes to Victoria Street, later to Deansgate.
3. Turn left into John Dalton Street (after Kendals on the right).
4. Pass Albert Square, the Town Hall and City Art Gallery. Keep straight ahead until you pick up white on brown tourism signs (Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum) directing right into Grosvenor Street.
5. Go to end of Grosvenor Street and follow tourism sign directing left onto Oxford Road.
6. Travel straight down Oxford Road, passing the Manchester Museum, the University of Manchester main building and Student Union, the Whitworth Art Gallery is a further 400m down Oxford Road opposite the Manchester Royal Infirmary.
From A6 Stockport eg from Stockport, Derbyshire
1. From Stockport, follow signs for Manchester.
2. After about 3 1/2 miles, pick up white on brown tourism signs (Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum) directing left on to Plymouth Grove.
3. At end of Plymouth Grove, follow tourism sign directing right onto Upper Brook Street.
4. Follow tourism sign directing left onto Brunswick Street.
5. At end of Brunswick Street, follow tourism sign directing left onto Oxford Road.
6. Travel straight down Oxford Road, passing the University of Manchester Student Union, the Whitworth Art Gallery is a further 400m down Oxford Road opposite the Manchester Royal Infirmary.
From M61/M62 West eg from Liverpool, Preston, Wigan
1. Exit Junction 1 (M61) to join M62 at Junction 14.
2. Exit Junction 12 (M62) to join M602 (Salford).
3. At end of M602, get in right hand lane and follow road straight ahead (Regent Road).
4. Keep on straight ahead until on A57M (Mancunian Way).
5. Pick up white on brown tourism signs (Whitworth Art Gallery and Manchester Museum) taking first exit to join A5103 (Princess Road) to Moss Side.
6. Follow tourism sign at junction of Princess Road/Moss Lane East (traffic lights, large grey Scottish and Newcastle Brewery on the corner) directing right onto Moss Lane East.
7. Follow road to end, follow tourism sign directing left at junction with Oxford Road.
8. The Whitworth Art Gallery is on the left, past Whitworth Park and opposite Manchester Royal Infirmary.
