Neverland: Rediscovering Child Art

Neverland: exhibition summary

'Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up' - Pablo Picasso

Neverland features work by Pablo Picasso, Jean Dubuffet, Paul Klee, Joan Miro, CoBrA artists Karel Appel and Lucebert who were inspired by children's art, seeing a unique creativity and spontaneity at play.

Neverland looks at two of the pioneering figures in child art, Viennese Professor Franz Cizek (1865 - 1946) and British teacher Marion Richardson (1892 - 1946) who were doing groundbreaking work in the first decades of the 20th century. The exhibition recreates elements of Richardson's original 1928 exhibition of children's drawings held at the Whitworth.

Neverland features today's children responding to the question 'what does child art mean and look like to you?' A section 'Could a Child Do That?' is deliberately provocative, mixing works by childen and work from modern and contemporary artists who regularly attract the comment 'a child could do that'... Could they?  Would they?

Clockwise L-R: Louise Wener by Kat (1993), Marc Almond by EssexGirl (1983), Amy Winehouse by Robyn (2008), Mick Jagger by Phil B (1971)

Part unashamed nostalgia trip and part showcase for the innovative digital fan-art of the noughties, Popped! is a celebration of teenage obsessions. It is a new commission created by Smiling Wolf.
