Inspiration in all things ‘green’

Programming

The Whitworth is the only UK gallery to have created dedicated posts with a remit to raise awareness, educate and inspire our many and diverse visitors in all things ‘green’.

The Whitworth’s Learning & Engagement team offers unique programming, supporting formal learning at all levels, as well as family activities, events for young people, and cultural experiences to help improve health and wellbeing.  Sustainability or thinking ‘green’ is often a common thread in our offer, from outdoor learning with Forest schools, to adult art and photography using the landscape as inspiration, and Welly Walks for youngsters.

A ‘Cycle Flash-mob’ event with an art theme, organised by our Student Coordinator, inspired new arrivals to the University to engage with the gallery, whilst the first textile exhibition in our new building was titled Green; an accompanying conference and up-cycling workshops opened up the debate for audiences around the sustainability of resources and the textile industry.

Through our Arts & Health programme we can proffer well-being and reflection in the quiet of our Orchard Garden or practice Tai-chi in the park, and our horticulture based Grow project helps individuals from the community acquire new skills, rebuild confidence and the opportunity to engage socially in a safe and culturally inspiring environment.

Recent awards, including ArtFund Museum of the Year 2015, and Visit England Large Visitor Attraction 2016, have highlighted the gallery’s openness and willingness to be a social space for all the local community to enjoy Arts and Culture.  Included in this is a desire to embody a sustainable approach and to offer our visitors the opportunity to engage with us through our new building, the surrounding landscape and through our programming.
