Legacies

Making and confirming your estate plans represents one of the most personal statements you make about what has been most important in your life. The University of Manchester's new legacy programme offers ways to leave a donation to the Whitworth At Gallery in your will, helping the long-term development of the Gallery's activity and collections. Please contact Jo Beggs, Head of Development and Resources to discuss options in confidence on 0161 275 7474 or e-mail jo.beggs@manchester.ac.uk

You may also be interested to know that this September some of Manchester's best-loved museums and galleries are joining forces to highlight how important legacy donations can be to them.

The announcement is inspired by the first ever International Legacy Giving Day which took place on Tuesday 13 September 2011.

The partners involved are Manchester Art Gallery, The Whitworth Art Gallery, The Manchester Museum, Museum of Science and Industry (MOSI), People's History Museum and National Football Museum.

The city's galleries and museums are grateful recipients of many artefacts and legacies which have been generously bequeathed over the years. Today however, financial donations are becoming increasingly important to the future of museums and galleries. These organisations are using International Legacy Giving Day as a focus to encourage people to consider writing a gift into their wills, which will be recognised as a valuable contribution in the years to come.

Directors of Manchester Museums and Galleries released a joint statement commenting on the new initiative:

'Manchester's rich cultural landscape is home to an outstanding array of nationally and internationally important museums and galleries displaying collections of the highest calibre. Our rich history is based on a thirst for knowledge, and over the years our supporters have recognised the importance and the value that museums have for everyone. In times of economic austerity, when it may not be quite as easy as it was to make financial donations, writing a gift in your will is a wonderful and effective way to support the museums and galleries that you care most passionately about. By helping to secure our long-term financial future in this way, you can play a vital part in ensuring that our work will continue to benefit current and future generations.'

Individual Giving

Over the past few years  a number of generous gifts from individuals have offered support for exhibitions, acquisitions and learning programmes. What's more if you sign a Gift Aid declaration the Gallery benefits from an additional 22% at no extra cost to you.

You can give online to the Gallery's Capital Development Project which will transform the Whitworth with new gallery spaces, learning studio, study rooms and art garden.
