Words and Numbers

Walter Crane was very interested in teaching children to read and write by looking at pictures. He produced a variety of books about learning words and numbers. Most of these books were inspired by the stories he told his own children when they were learning to read and write.

Decorated Letters

Walter was very interested in different types of lettering and collected examples of beautiful handwriting to inspire him.

Many of the books illustrated by Crane contained decorated letters. These letters were similar to those that Walter saw in old manuscripts. These manuscripts are described as ‘illuminated’, which means they are heavily decorated.
